Tring Achieves Fairtrade Town Status

Tring has been successful in it’s application to be recognised as a Fairtrade town. It is the first town in Dacorum to achieve this distinction.

The Fairtrade Foundation commented that they were very impressed with Tring’s comprehensive application.

In order to gain Fairtrade Town status, Tring had to demonstrate that Fairtrade produce was readily avialable to buy, drink and eat in a number of shops and restaurants in the town. Tring over achieved the benchmarks in every category.

The official presentation of the Fairtrade Certificate to Tring’s Mayor, Nick Hollinghurst, will take place on Saturday 20th October at 11.30am in the Farmer’s Market.

The presentation also coincides with Apple Fayre Day, a traditional Tring event, so there will be lot of festivities for you to enjoy.

‘Fairtrade for Tring’ Campaign – Coffee Morning for Tring Businesses

As part of the campaign to achieve Fairtrade town status for Tring, a coffee morning for Tring Businesses was held at the historic Robin Hood Pub on Friday 27th April 2007.

Smiths Coffee Company, who roast and grind fairtrade coffee beans in Hemel Hempstead, brewed up 4 delicious Fairtrade coffees for guests to sample. Everyone agreed that the quality of all of the coffees tasted were superb.

Colin Smith, Managing Director of Smiths Coffee Company, gave an interesting presentation on how buying fairtrade coffee and tea makes a big difference to the lives of poor farmers in third world countries. He demonstrated that by changing to Fairtrade, local Tring businesses can help build local schools and health centres where none had previously existed.

Philip Smith from Smiths Coffee Company spoke about the different types of fairtrade coffee and how every size of business, from small to large, could be catered for.

Among the guests were Victoria Pollard and Anne Jarman from the Bow House Dental practice, David Roberts from Pendley Manor and The Rose & Crown Hotels, Robert Masters from Robert Masters Accountants, Deborah Grigg and Mel Matthews from Benellie, Katie Hill of Totality Day Spa, Tristan Lee of Singagram, Ian Gower of The Court Theatre, Alice Dowswell, Tring Museum and Maria, Assistant Manager of Co-operative Store.

A big thank you to Terry and Stuart at the Robin Hood Pub for kindly hosting the event.
